Nicholas Farruggia Dan Willson of Withered Hand lore is the best writer of melodies currently alive (believe me, I've looked). He hasn't written a song I don't adore. The streak continues here. I'm also happy to report that the songs from a Singer of Songs are also quite lovely, especially the last. Buy this and everything these two outfits have ever produced. Favorite track: Santa Cova.

Nobody gets out of here alive All the idiots love another rock ’n’ roll suicide Step into the light and let it go, let it go You'll be looking at a new man After the show So what if i'm not drinking anymore? Got sick of picking my body up off the floor Got sick of finding diamonds in your eyes, In your eyes I'll be looking for a new man Between the lies It’s not hard to see the good in you You see the broken parts of me You say the light is streaming through You've so many way to say What I barely explain away You'll be looking at a new man Here beside you Someday our harvest is bound to fail Everything we built together just hanging by a nail Our river used to wind its way Down from the valley into the plain You'll be looking at a new man After the rain You'll be looking at a new man After the rain

Wishes Gone 03:01
I wish I could see through horse eyes I wish my skin were a place to hide I wish I’d start where winter ends And silence were a way to mend I wish these pop songs were punk rock And tender kisses ruthless love I wish I were awake asleep And roots could grow all over me I wish I could build my home inside you I wish some wishes would never come true I wish I’d see, I wish I’d know I wish I’d go where wishes go When they’re gone, gone, gone I wish for shadow before light I wish the rain didn't fall right I wish we had long notes for names I wish the wind brought pouring rain I wish this were a wordless song And the words I scratched out weren’t wrong I wish I could trade thoughts for deeds I wish my wishes were my needs I wish I could build my home inside you I wish some wishes would never come true I wish I’d see, I wish I’d know I wish I’d go where wishes go When they’re gone, gone, gone

The Sign 02:13
Left alone with a memory Carving our names into the tree Was it 93 or 92 I remember you walking on the water saying "If I can’t have your soul, then I will take your name" I hadn't been a lot of places I thought that we would stay the same My eyes were drawn to the city lights before me Now years lay coiled in my palm, beads upon a rosary Son you have your mother's eyes Your sister has a beauty that she can't disguise Now I have seen a lot of places Come to recognize, I come to recognize The Sign

Among Horses 05:40
Birds, they will breed Hands, they will feed There’ll be horses to break Steep trails to make Turn old into new Sad into true Work will be done Songs will be sung Shadows await Blisters be made Sweat dried by sun Rabbits and guns Despite the shackles we’re in We will command Farewell planes to catch Farewell skies to scratch Farewell fun to seek Farewell places to be Farewell enemies Farewell buzzing streets Farewell old sad me Farewell old sad me Despite the shackles we’re in We will command

Santa Cova 03:00
At Pamplona we lost more than our horses I lost my legs to the cannonballs Is this the way they try to slow a good man down You could never put my spirit in the ground I was a broken down body with a lion’s heart Spending too much time seeking in the dark Counting years in the scales of a serpent’s tail Oh righteous unbeliever Follow me Up at the Santa Cova I left my devil laying in the shade Lit a candle for the Black Madonna I believed Up at the Santa Cova I left my devils laying in the shade Lit a candle for the Black Madonna I am alive I do not want what i do not have Counting wildflowers growing on the stony path Dedicating prayers to pilgrims and the animals Little children, cannonballs When I was giving up my sword for the life of the lord I heard a rumour coming down the line A good intention is its own reward Some people have a holy book but only read the spine Not me Singing I am alive

Stray 05:34
It’s okay to stray Don’t be afraid to lose your way Thunder’s rolling our way But it’s coming to go away It’s okay to stray Don’t be afraid to lose your way

At the ragged end of an Indian summer, September 2016, on the tiny organic farm of Anna and Gato, off the highway from Barcelona heading north, two new friends unloaded some guitars and mics into the dusty makeshift studio of Frank. Sleeping with their notebooks in an airy part of the farmhouse they got to work making an EP together, with no expectations other than a week away from the noise of the city and the demands of work or family life.

With the hope of songs to come, they woke from dreams to the sound of birds, dogs and horses. Sharing in the life of the farm in early mornings and in the evening blessed with simple fare prepared from the field, stale plans were discarded and new ones arose. Shepherded by Frank who shrugged off a fever to add percussion, moog and bass here and there, Dan and Lieven began threshing ideas into new songs that reflect this short time and space together among the horses, in the shadow of Montserrat, Catalonia’s sacred peak.

The recordings in your hand are the result of recordings on the final days of this retreat. Some represent unfinished business maybe but this is the fruit of our time together. A brief harvest. New songs dreamed up on the farm, recorded on the farm. It is all in here somehow, from the dark nights to the dogs on the dusty road and the saints of the holy mountain. We remain, at your service, ghosts of two friends laughing in the yard with an old guitar while dogs sleep at our feet. Enjoy.
