Tasting all the sounds, pulling my sheets high Trying to hold my breath ‘till a car comes by On a lonely night Staring at the ceiling, trying to ignore All the scary faces in the pattern on the floor On a lonely night Dear old Teddy with one leg outside your box Where’s your strength to comfort me On this lonely night Peering through the curtains, counting all the starts Trying to be witness of an old one fading out On a lonely night Leaning through the window, trying to catch the smell of rain evaporating right after it fell On a lonely night Dear shattered poster of an idol from before Where’s your strength to comfort me? On this lonely night, On this lonely night The wind is whistling it’s whining song Through the shutters of my room Radio on my pillow, playing AM tunes Music from a country singer howling at the moon On a lonely night Sweet guitar in the corner with rusty strings Where’s your strength to comfort now? On this lonely night, on this lonely night, on this lonely night, on this lonely night

The old man said you are not made of sugar if you don't beg or steal you’ll have to work hard every day remember to forget what doesn't matter for every choice you make there is a price to pay If you take the easy gate count on it that you'll get fooled if you think that you are clever know that you’ll be overruled if you're think you’ve found the answer after the debate the answer is too late The old man said why do you dye your hair? life's a battle the conqueror is age you want to live forever but you’re afraid of getting old if you want my wisdom embrace the final stage If you take the easy gate… Out in your car with spotted chrome it takes me far away from home away from care and good advise away from fights and compromise there’s no way home anymore there’s no way home anymore no way home anymore If you long for peaceful phrases silence is the tongue to speak if you think that you are ready why don’t you turn the other cheek? if you think you need a friend the best thing to be done is being one

I'm Alright 02:05
Here I stand with empty hands while rain is falling down on naked feet in a dead end street confusion is my ground but I’m alright I’m alright I took this load down the road now take me through the night it runs rife that my life was no more than a plight but I’m alright I’m alright I know my conscience got me here now all I want to do is disappear I’m alright I’m alright I’m alright
4.
Why are you shouting at the sun? Why do you want to hide the stars? Why do you turn your back to the ocean? Do you feel like me? Why do you say you feel alright? Why is your pillow wet with tears? Why are you wearing these dark shades? Do you feel like me? But when a child comes crawling straight to you when a waiter hums your favorite tune when you hear the voice of your best friend do you feel like them? When the night falls down and the fear fades out do you still dream? Turn around, feel the sun. Stay around to find the stars and go swimming in the ocean. Why do you say you feel alright? Why do you have to be like me?

I watched the sun come up today The wind swept all the clouds away Sky did turn from grey to blue As my thoughts did turn to you The birds sang songs we used to sing Memories of you to bring Soft and sweet and clear and high The day is slowly passing by Tonight I’ll be alone and blue With empty arms that long for you I’ll only hear the lonesome sound Since you left our little town I don’t know why you went away And nothing ’s all you had to say Not a word comes through here about you And since my heart will break in two Another night alone and blue With empty arms that long for you I only hear the lonesome sound Since you left our little town Since you left our little town

It’s funny to remember how we started with a fight you said you feared the dark as much as I disliked the light we both used to have nightmares we conquered them with dreams. The first time we danced I could feel your breath when your warm voice said I won't give up on you. I used to be so reckless looking for extremes trying hard to live you said you're only tryin' to feel I was showing how to be tough you showed me how to cry. Every time we dance I still feel your breath when your warm voice says I won't give up on you. And now the years have gone by we can't remember our last fight but we now that were both wrong just as well as we were right. Every time we dance I still feel your breath when your warm voice says I won't give up on you dancing 'round and 'round and 'round.

Here I stand in my best dress I thought it would impress but I can’t breathe. I see them dancing around me every stare that finds me I can’t breathe. Over my shoulder, the exit’s near but I know that I won’t leave I look at my friends and how they cheer but I know who to believe. I try to look like I belong sing along to their song but I can’t breathe. Home, I lay down in my bed play the night in my head I still can’t breathe.

This town is larger than it seems with curvy roads leading us to nowhere the rebel and the poet are nowhere to be seen this town ain't big enough for dreams. I walk along the fields of corn where we used to make a labyrinth angry farmers chased us while we were chasing dreams mothers gave us shelter without knowing of our sins. This town is larger than it seems endless plains drawing the horizon no theatre, no movies, no dance and no extremes this town ain't big enough for dreams. The little school upon the hill where we learned with effort how to write the rigid teacher taught us how to obey the rules she didn't find the time to tell the story of the light. This town is larger than it seems this town ain’t big enough for dreams.

Last night I watched a child in a yellow raincoat running through the puddles, trying to catch the falling rain her hands above her head like broken teacups for every drop she caught another slipped away. She froze to see me standing in the doorway she looked at me and bowed with great esteem she whispered you’re so tall, you must be strong, then so miss, can you help me catch a dream? Reach for the sky and try to paint me a rainbow or may-be you can chuck a plane. Reach for the sky and try to choke the sunlight I will keep on trying to catch the rain. I asked her where she lived to take her home she shivered like a new-born foal her mother cried and asked why do you keep running away she said, I’m catching rain for you to quench your soul. Reach for the sky and try to paint me a rainbow or maybe you can chuck a plane. Reach for the sky and try to choke the sunlight I will keep on trying to catch the rain.

I’ve been cleaning up your room your clothes, your shoes and your perfume all the small bestowments. The coloured sheets still on the bed the furry kitten on the head as if any moment you might walk in again. The curtains keep out all the light to remind me of the night when we sat down crying. When I told you if I stay we’ll keep on fighting anyway. We hugged and kissed and then you heard me say one day, I might walk in again. Now you’re travelling ‘round the world with my expectations furled in your case of memories. You don’t have to disappear to realize your place is here You’re just sitting here eyes closed until you hear that I walk in again that you walk in again that I walk in again

The Swallow 04:09
I’m a traveler heading home with worn-out shoes and weary bones my tan reflects a road along blue skies. All the stories you tell I wonder if they’re true I’ve been traveling all alone to where a swallow may have flown where flowers bloom and mighty mountains rise. Are you sure that this song really is ‘bout you? I see my hometown reappear the pub with all my friends so dear the house where every Sunday lasts a year. And as I lay my suitcase on the bed before my eyes a swallow stops to rest. It shivers and it turns to where the sunlight burns and then it flies. These men in humdrum bars they dreamed about big cars and while they drank I dreamed about past times. How I hated when you dropped me off in that old car. I thought about the bay me and my brother used to play where we thought we were cool betting for dimes. Do you think that your brother takes his children there? And now that I’m returning here my innocence has disappeared the raindrops on the sand seem little tears. And while I’m looking for lost coins in the sand a beautiful blue swallow touches land. It shivers and it turns to where the sunlight burns and then it flies. I’m a traveler leaving home ready for an endless roam heading for a road with clear blue skies. I can see that this song is really about you.

about

A father and his daughter both hit rock bottom during Coronavirus lockdown in Belgium. They came up with the idea to write letters to try to pull each other out of the darkness, but instead songs popped out. They sent them back and forth and when they were finally allowed to see each other again, they headed straight into the father’s basement and recorded them. The result is “Letters”, Wearyland’s second album and an ode to nearness in times of distance.
